A city in Georgia, Eatonton is the county seat of Putnam County. Found in 1807, the city is named after William Eaton who was a diplomat and an officer in the First Barbary War. According to the US Census Bureau, the city covers 54 square kilometers. The city has a population of 6,466. The population density is 119.7 people per square kilometer.
Initially, Eatonton was a town, incorporated in 1809. It was recognized as a city in 1879. After the American Revolutionary War, the settlers moved to the west and settled in the Piedmont region for developing cotton plantations. The major industry of Eatonton is dairy farming so today, it is known as the Dairy Capital of the state.
There is a Native American archaeological site, named the Rock Eagle Effigy Mound, in this city. This site is administered by the University of Georgia. These earthwork constructions were made by the people from the Woodland culture. The education system in this city is regulated by the Putnam County School District.
This city is also home to a number of tourist attractions. There are many restaurants where you can enjoy food during your stay. There are a number of local landmarks, which include the Harllee branch Power Plant that is a coal fired power station, the Crooked Pines Farm, and the Ooh La La Lavender Farm. Situated here are two museums, the Uncle Remus Museum and the Memory Lane Classic Cars Museum. These places are not to be missed.
Eatonton experiences hot and humid summers and mild to cool winters. It has 220 sunny days with a high of 34 degrees in July and a low of 7 degrees in winter. The city experiences no snowfall and 47 inches of rainfall every year. The weather in summer makes air conditioners necessary. However, there is no need for heating systems in this city.
